Two Saturday’s ago, the SCUTS lost to the #14 Arizona Wildcats 5-55. The Wildcats jumped out early scoring 19 unanswered points until Ryan Chavkin, ’17 scored his first SCUTS try. The SCUTS threatened to score multiple times, sparked by line breaks by Kyle Dunne, ’15 but never were able to punch it in. While the outcome was not what the SCUTS wanted Connor Leahy, ’17 turned in a positive performance on defense and was a tackling machine.
This past week the SCUTS lost to Colorado Buffaloes 16-29. It was a hard fought physical match between the two teams. The SCUTS struck first with a penalty kick by JJ Holmgren, ‘15. CU responded with ten points of their own before Kyle Dunne’s, ‘15 try put the score at 8-10 ending a defensive first half led by Mitch Spinelli, ’18 and Riley White, ’16. In the second half the Buffaloes found the try-zone first and the SCUTS responded with another Holmgren penalty kick to shrink the deficit to 11-17. The ball rarely left CU’s half for most of the remaining time, but they were still able to convert a couple of long tries. SCUTS Andrew Clem, ‘16 had an amazing second half defensive effort and forced multiple turnovers and scored the match’s final try with just under five minutes in the match.
Two weeks ago the SCUTS B-Side lost their match against Arizona as well. Led by good defense from Mitch Spinelli, ’18 and Christian Ayscue, ’18 the SCUTS showed improvement in their second match. As the season moves on the young athletes will learn more about the game and improve their offense.
This past week, B-Side won their first match of the season against Colorado’s B-Side. Asad Braswell, ’17 and Nick Russo, ’17 both scored for the SCUTS in an impressive first win.
The SCUTS pulled out the win this past weekend against crosstown rival Stanford University 22-19. The Cardinal put up a tough fight getting ahead 19-3 in the first half. The SCUTS had multiple scoring opportunities but came up short showing the youth of the team. The only highlight came from the surefooted senior J.J. Holmgren who slotted a penalty kick from 40 meters out.In the second half the SCUTS woke up an controlled the ball for most of the half. A great run by Ryan Chavkin (12) followed by an off load to Sophomore Connor Rounds (6) put the SCUTS on the board with their first try. Shortly after, Matt Fitzgerald (10) made a great line break leading to the try. The rest of the half was quite as the SCUTS fought for field position. With five minutes left in the match, the final try to put the SCUTS in the lead came from Freshman Prop Miguel Chappa (21) as he picked the ball and got around the corner for a twenty meter scamper to the try zone.
The B-side game saw a lot of fresh faces with over 35 SCUTS getting in the game. Stanford ended up winning 29-0. That being said the SCUTS had some great runs from John Salcido and Steven “Julio” Lorenzo, We look forward to seeing the B-sIde develop.
