On October 24th, 2009, the SCUTS made the annual trek to Santa Cruz for the Slugfest tournament hosted by UC Santa Cruz. Over 12 teams participated in the day’s activities, including four teams that the SCUTS will meet again in the regular season.
First up for the SCUTS were the San Francisco State Gators. SFSU took an early lead with 2 trys before freshman center Will Lynch broke through to score the only try for the SCUTS. Freshman scrumhalf Matthew Zarella kicked for points. Final score for the SCUTS rookies’ first match was 14-7.
The SCUTS faced future regular season opponent Fresno State for the second match of the day. While Fresno State earned the first try of the match, the SCUTS rebounded with a try from freshman wing Carter Rummage. With the momentum from the first try, the SCUTS dominated for the rest of the match, with one try from senior Tim Chiong and 2 trys from senior forward Anders Loven-Holt to seal the SCUTS’ victory at 22-8.
In a heated match against the UC Davis freshman team, the SCUTS remained in control of the ball to earn a shut-out victory against the Aggies, 36-0. Freshmen Brett Davey, and Alex Pascale, sophomore Ryan Alverson, juniors Alan Lee and Anthony Driver, and Loven-Holt all landed in the try zone for the win.
In the final match of the day versus Long Beach State, the SCUTS put out a valuable effort against the Division 1 club. However, the SCUTS’ efforts weren’t enough to earn a final win and the SCUTS were shut out 22-0.
Overall, the SCUTS’ record for 2009 Slugfest was 2-2.
