vs UC Santa Cruz

It was a great start to the regular season as the SCUTS took home their first win against local rivals UC Santa Cruz.  On an unusually sunny day in January at Bellomy Field, the SCUTS took an early lead and held on for a commanding final score of 36-12.

Sophomore fullback Michael Dessel scored his first of three trys in the opening minutes of the game on a fast break.  Freshman center Daniel Iritani kicked for points to bring the SCUTS up 7-0.  Sophomore flyhalf Chris Spirz broke through the Slugs defensive line and a stepped his way past a would-be defender to score the second try for the SCUTS, with Iritani kicking for points.  As a response, the Slugs scored two back-to-back trys, converting one of two kicks for points to end the half with a close score of 14-12.

Despite the close score at the half the Slugs were unable to keep up with the energized SCUTS.  Senior wing Patrick Haggerty ran in for a try along the sidelines with Iritani kicking for points.  Fullback Dessel took advantage of the Slugs defense and scored two trys to end the Slug’s offensive game for good and Iritani made one of two kicks for points.  On a final note, the SCUTS received an opportunity for Iritani to make one last penalty kick which ended the game with a final score of 36 to 12, SCUTS win.
