Santa Cruz Slugfest Tournament - Cal Poly

October 20th was a day full of rugby for the Santa Clara University Touring Sides first tournament of the season.  Armed with over 15 returning players from last season and more than 25 rookies, the SCUTS were ready to take on the competition and show the Bay area their potential for the upcoming season.
While the Bside gained some valuable playing time and game exposure, the A-side team definitely proved that the SCUTS were a team to be reckoned with this year.  First up in the tournament for the SCUTS was Cal Poly.  While Cal Poly led the game 10-0 at the half, the SCUTS were able to rally back in the second half.   Senior scrumhalf Salman Shariat gained possession from a ruck to assist Sophomore forward Anders Loven-Holt for the try.  A few minutes later, Sophomore Flyhalf JP Goethals made a great pass to Junior center Tyler Petersen, allowing him to score the try and put the SCUTS up 12-10 with a kick for points by Shariat.  Despite a strong effort by Cal Polys defense at the end of the game, Senior centern Scott Peterson was able to break through and score one last try for the team, ending the game with a final score of 17-10 SCUTS.
