at Humboldt
February 16th, 2008 gave the SCUTS a memorable victory against the highly lauded
Humboldt State Jacks. Coming off of their win against Santa Rosa a few weeks ago, the SCUTS were ready to show Humboldt how much of a threat they are this season. Senior fullback Mitch Ryan started off the game right, making an immediate penalty kick. Humboldt responded with a try, but was unable to make the conversion, putting the score at 5-3 Humboldt. However, freshman wing Michael Dessel was able to capitalize on a great assist from Ryan to score his first try of the season, with Ryan kicking for points. By the sound of the whistle at the half, the score was tied at 10-10. In the second half the SCUTS took charge, dominating possession of the ball both offensively and defensively. Senior center Scott Peterson was able to pull off a breakaway with Junior wing Patrick Haggerty. Then a few minutes later Peterson broke through Humboldt again to score another try with Ryan kicking for points. Although Humboldt was able to add one more try to their scoreboard, the SCUTS’ mental focus and composure allowed them to keep the Jacks in line in the final minutes of the game, with a final score of SCUTS 25-17.
