at Stanford

On the Steuber Family Rugby Field at Stanford University on November 11th, the men of the Santa Clara University Touring Side got their chance to show just how improved a team they were in the preseason.
The B side game got off to a great start with freshman forward Anders Holt who scored the first points of the game on a thrilling drive towards the try zone.  Freshmen Arturo Maldonado and Ali Sherali also added some more points to the scoreboard with a break away try and a converted kick.  But despite the men’s hard efforts the game ended in a loss for the SCUTS, 41-12.
As for the A-side men, to say that the game was a close one is an understatement.  The SCUTS first try of the game was scored by junior rookie Zack Peck, his first try of his rugby career.  Sophomore Sean Carusi and Captain Salman Shariat also contributed to the scoreboard, scoring close tries against a tough Stanford defense.  In addition, senior John Travis was able to convert 3 kicks for the SCUTS side.  In the final minutes of the game, when the SCUTS were only two tries away from beating Stanford, senior Sean Falvey saw a break in the Stanford offense and was able to steal the ball from the opposing scrumhalf and then pass the ball to sophomore rookie Mike Ramirez to score his first try of his rugby career.  Although the team was only one try away from winning the game, in the final minutes Stanford was able to hang onto its lead and beat Santa Clara 31-26.
