at Cal Maritime

For the first game of the rugby season on January 20th, 2007, the Santa Clara University Touring Side was looking to start off their season with a win against Cal Maritime.  The SCUTS got off to a promising start when freshman Michael Chacon-Teran found a break in the Cal Maritime defense and passed the ball to sophomore Patrick Haggerty for the try in the first five minutes of the game. Senior Sean Falvey kicked for points.  A few minutes later, Falvey made a penalty kick to put the SCUTS up 10 to 0.  After allowing Cal Maritime a few tries of their own, it appeared that the SCUTS were going to make a comeback when Patrick Haggerty  scored another try in the second half.  But unfortunately the men just could not control Cal Maritime’s defense and lost the game 32-15.

Referee’s Recap

Referee - Bjorn Stumer

This was a spirited affair between two well drilled and committed sides. While Cal Maritime proved effective at mauls and at scrum time, Santa Clara proved to be ferocious tacklers.
After a fairly even first half, Cal Maritime found a fifth gear and ran away with the match. Final score: California Maritime Academy 32 - University of Santa Clara 15.
