The SCUTS took on Cal Poly this past Saturday afternoon on Bellomy field and played a back and forth, competitive match that resulted in a 41-30 loss. The team’s ability to capitalize on several Cal Poly turnovers gave them a tremendous opportunity during the second half to close the gap and take the lead, but Cal Poly answered every time and the teams traded scores throughout the last 20 minutes. In what was some of their best play of the young season, the SCUTS understand that the next two weeks leading up to their league opener will be a time to focus on specific areas of their game and continue to improve in their overall pattern. The team looks forward to its match with San Francisco Golden Gate this coming Saturday in what will be its last test prior to league play beginning the following Friday evening against Stanford.

Santa Clara beat UC Santa Cruz Saturday afternoon 55-18 in it’s first match of the season. The team was extremely happy with the start to the season and the pattern of play they were able to establish. Several impressive runs from junior Nick Johnson and others in the backline led to multiple scoring opportunities and 10 tries from the team on the afternoon. Senior Daniel Iritani and junior Nate May each scored multiple tries in the match. The team’s defensive pressure led to several opportunities and the pace at which the team was able to attack were the keys to a decisive victory.

The B-side Match was an impressive showing for many first year players as the team defeated Santa Cruz 55-20.

Next up for the SCUTS comes a Saturday match with Cal on Bellomy Field at 1PM. The team is excited for the opportunity and looks to continue improving as it plays through it’s non-league schedule.
